Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, has expressed his desire to retain Marcus Rashford despite the player hinting at a potential departure from Old Trafford after a lengthy association with the club.
Rashford, 27, who has been a part of United since his youth and boasts 138 goals in 426 appearances since his 2016 debut, recently revealed his openness to seeking a “new challenge.” This announcement followed his exclusion from last weekend’s derby against Manchester City.
In a Tuesday interview with journalist Henry Winter, Rashford hinted at the possibility of ending his 20-year stint at Manchester United, raising questions about his future at the club.
Addressing the matter during a Wednesday press conference ahead of the League Cup quarter-final clash against Tottenham, Amorim clarified that he hadn’t yet spoken with Rashford due to giving the team a day off.
“He’s our player and is preparing for the next match,” Amorim said. When asked if he wanted Rashford to stay, the manager replied, “Absolutely. A club like this requires exceptional talent, and Marcus is a remarkable talent. My priority is to support him in delivering top performances.”
Amorim further noted that the “new challenge” Rashford mentioned could involve rejuvenating United’s current struggles, as the club sits at an uncharacteristic 13th position in the Premier League.
“This is one of the greatest football challenges,” Amorim said. “Manchester United remains one of the most iconic clubs globally, and overcoming this period is a formidable task. I hope every player, including Marcus, embraces this challenge.”
